Biography

With more than 22 years of experience in Financial Markets & Information Technology, Nicolas leads the EMEA digital risk and compliance practice of Promontory, a consulting brand of IBM, providing strategic advice on regulatory matters to large financial institutions (DORA, MiCA, AI Act, etc…).

Before joining Promontory, Nicolas spent 11 years as Chief Operations Officer (COO)  of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). He was part of the founding executive team of the European Securities and Markets Authority – in charge of Information Technology, Human Resources, Finance and Procurement, and Facility Management.

As Chair of the IT Management Group, composed of the CIOs of all EU financial regulators, he led the set up of more than 40 pan European systems exchanging all financial data across Europe (MiFIR, EMIR, AIFMD & SFTR, ESEF etc…) to facilitate regulation of EU markets.

In his position, Nicolas led the set up of all operational matters of the new Authority, and its growth from 30 to 350 staff members. He was leading there a multicultural team of 150 FTEs (100 internal / 50 consultants).

Prior to his experience at ESMA, Nicolas was the IT Director of the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR) where he set up the first paneuropean IT system exchanging all transactions executed in Europe across its 28 financial regulators.

Nicolas Vasse started his career at Microsoft as prototype programmer and moved then to a project manager position at the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) leading the establishment of the IT systems in charge of the certification of investment funds and rebuilding the surveillance systems which are analysing daily all transactions executed in Europe to detect market abuses.
